Here Comes Judge

ExtractExtract (Disney)
Mike Judge’s movies are hard to dislike: from Beavis and Butthead Do America to Office Space to Idiocracy to Extract, Judge has a finger on the pulse of small-town foibles and idiosyncrasies. However, as writer-director, Judge needs an editor and a sounding board: he too often allows his own laser-sharp comic jabs to be hijacked by less effective, usually clichéd broadsides. That’s especially true in Extract, whose relevant pokes at everyday workplaces are sidetracked by irrelevant, unfunny asides about adulterous but frigid wives and annoying neighbors. Still, when it’s on, Extract—helped by an amiable cast led by Jason Bateman, Mila Kunis, Kristen Wiig and an hilarious Gene Simmons of Kiss as a ambulance-chasing lawyer—has indispensible things to say about America’s current malaise. The lone extra is a behind-the-scenes featurette.
